Love and Loss

Love and Loss. 2022. Ink on Cotton Paper

Hands move up and down the paper, un-anchored to anything and in a sense floating in space. From the hands, there are orchids growing out of the veins, as ink like blood moves down with gravity.

Following inspiration from hands in old renaissance paintings, this piece mirrors a hand study. The hands move absent from the rest of the body but rather overlapping each other. The hands are posed in both graceful and grotesque ways, again taking inspiration from the overly posed thin fingers. The flowers grow from veins as the tendons are emphasized. The piece is both beautiful and painful, as love is. The hands are graceful and beautiful, and the flowers grow strongly, but even with this beauty there is pain as the flower uses the strength to grow. For me this piece illustrates the beauty and growth that comes from loving someone and the pain that may come from drifting apart.
